Frequently Asked Questions

Individual federal tax returns, Form 1040, are due April 15, 2022. If you file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension, by April 15, 2022 the due date is extended to October 17, 2022.

Note: The 1040 Automatic Extension does not include an extension for any tax payments you may owe. Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments are still due on April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, respectively.

In order to file for an extension that will last until October 15, 2021, you must provide us with any income that has federal withholding by May 17, 2021 for non-clients and June 15, 2021 for current clients. Common documents containing information for extensions are:

  • W-2
  • 1099-R
  • Social Security
  • 1040 ES Payments
Or if you’d prefer to file for an extension yourself, you can find the Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension, on our Forms page and download it for free. Follow the instructions on the form for filling it out and mailing it in.

Starting January 2020, in an attempt to cut down on fraudulent tax filing, the IRS now requires each individual and their spouse (if applicable) to provide up-to-date driver’s license information to electronically file your Form 1040 tax return.

Due to COVID-19 and closure of certain government offices, this may be subject to change.

IRS letters can range from insignificant to urgent. If you received a letter from the IRS and you’re uncertain what it’s about, you can scan it and send it to us via the client portal. You can also email it to Jeff or any of our staff – contact information is on our Contact page – or you can drop it off at the front desk for review.

The IRS will never call you. Period. If you’ve received a call from a person or a recording stating they are from the Internal Revenue Service, it’s a scam. They may even sound believable by mentioning something that might pertain to you and your taxes. But never, ever give out any personal information over the phone.

If the IRS needs to notify you, they will send a letter. And if you’re uncertain as to what the letter means or what it might be about, you can bring it to us and we will interpret the meaning of the correspondence and guide you through the process as pain-free as possible.

If you filed a paper return, it takes about six-eight weeks from the date the IRS receives your return. Direct deposit usually takes less time than a paper check.

If you electronically filed your tax return, it should take approximately three to four weeks to receive your paper check. Much like a paper return, direct deposit will be quicker.

If your refund takes longer than eight weeks to arrive, first use the ‘Where’s My Refund’ tool on the IRS website. If that doesn’t answer your question, let us know.
